Graduate School of Journalism, University of California, Berkeley

About

About the Seminar

The KDMC at UC Berkeley offered a customized visual storytelling workshop to train journalists on new ways to process data from the 2010 Census. Fellows illustrated the information using visualization and mapping tools to create a clearer, more meaningful picture of the complex statistics gathered in the once-a-decade national survey.

During this intensive six-day workshop, fellows learned to create cutting-edge interactive census graphics. The skills and tools learned benefit your newsroom and your career long after the census.

In this workshop, participants learned to:

  • Tell stories with interactive GIS maps
  • Clean and prepare U.S. Census data
  • Create beautiful and effective interactive charts; and
  • Build close connections with 19 great visual storytellers
