About the Seminar

Special workshop for Montana news executives and journalism educators

In the next few years, mobile devices will become the most common way for Americans to access the Internet. That’s why you must put your mobile strategy front of mind today!

In partnership with the Knight Digital Media Center @ USC, the University of Montana’s School of Journalism held a one-day workshop designed to help you lead your newsroom into a fast changing mobile landscape. The workshop featured leading mobile experts who explored mobile strategies that make sense for community news organizations who are on a tight budget. Attendees learned how going mobile can help build business, support or enhance content offerings, and capitalize on new opportunities to earn revenue and engage your communities.

This was not just about building fancy apps for expensive smart phones. Mobile is an increasingly important media and communication channel across all income levels, for devices from cheap “candybar” cell phone up to iPads, and from rural regions up to major metro areas.

Attendees learned:

  • What the current mobile landscape looks like, and what the future may bring.
  • How marketers are pushing the mobile envelope, and what news organizations can learn from them.
  • How to assess your local mobile audience, market potential, and wireless networks
  • What a mobile-friendly web site really looks like, and how it’s different from regular web development
  • Integrating e-mail, social media, text alerts, apps, and the mobile web into an effective experience
  • Promoting your mobile offerings
  • Educating your staff and audience about mobile
  • Developing mobile apps that really make sense for your audience and business
