imageKaren Ducey is a multimedia journalist based in Seattle. She had been a staff photographer at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer until the paper's closure in 2009. Her project is Rescue News Northwest, which will cover animal welfare issues in the Pacific Northwest. Ducey began her career as a freelance photographer while working as a deckhand aboard commercial fishing boats in Alaska for a decade. In 1999 she joined the staff of the Indianapolis Star. Her work has been nationally recognized including Best of the West, American Society of Newspaper Editors Community Service Photojournalism, Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, and National Press Photographers Association. Ducey also was a Casey Medal finalist and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her multimedia work on teenage gun violence in 2008. She has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and was a full-time student in the MFA Photography program at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
