Maria De Varenne is the editor and vice president of news at The (Riverside) Press-Enterprise. She joined The Press-Enterprise in 1999 as projects editor. She became managing editor in April 2000 and then executive editor in June 2001. She was named editor and vice president of news in October 2002. Previously, De Varenne was the assistant managing editor at the San Bernardino County Sun. She began her career as a general assignment reporter in Daytona Beach, Fla. She also worked as a business reporter, a business editor and a special projects editor for papers in Texas and Pennsylvania. Under her leadership, The Press-Enterprise and PE.com have won numerous regional, state and national news awards. Last fall, The Press-Enterprise was named one of the top 25 U.S. daily newspapers to gain audiences in both print readership, up 5.48 percent, and online readership, up 27.61 percent. Most recently, The Press-Enterprise was awarded 1st place general excellence for newspapers of circulations between 75,001 and 200,000 in the state by the California Newspaper Publisher Association's Better Newspaper Contest. De Varenne holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico and her graduate studies concentration was in art history.
