Fellow for News Entrepreneur Boot Camp 2010

imageMcNelly Torres is an award-winning independent journalist and the stimulus team leader for EdMoney.org, a project of the Education Writers Association. She also writes consumer investigations for ConsumerAffairs.com and recently collaborated with journalists from El Centro de Periodismo Investigativo de Puerto Rico to investigate the deadly refinery explosion in Puerto Rico in October 2009. Torres has worked at five daily newspapers across the United States. Most recently, Torres was a consumer writer for the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. Her consumer watchdog stories have won state, regional and national awards, including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists award for investigative journalism and SPJ's Green Eyeshade award. In 2008, Torres became the first Latina elected to the board of Investigative Reporters and Editors. She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Colorado State University-Pueblo, formerly known as the University of Southern Colorado.
