imageP. Kim Bui is a digital journalist and self-professed nerd. She manages KPCC's ongoing commitment to social media and engagement on and off the web, including OnCentral.org, a collaborative reporting site covering South Los Angeles.

Her experience in web journalism includes major newspapers as well as news start-ups. She began her career in Kansas City after winning first place in the Roy W. Howard Reporting Competition at the Iowa State Daily. In Kansas City, she covered a number of cities in the northern region of the city for the Kansas City Star. Bui later moved to San Luis Obispo as a city reporter for the San Luis Obispo Tribune, covering Paso Robles. She later became one of the paper's first web producers, converting print text for the web. At the Tribune, she also started and grew the social media accounts for the paper as well as a hyperlocal venture, MySLOCounty.

Her work in startups ranges from reporting on finances for the 20-something set to running the web site and web initiatives for The Loop 21, an African American news analysis site. Outside of journalism, she managed GoBankingRates, a financial information site owned by Consumertrack, Inc. She managed projects, worked with developers and created infographics with graphic designers during her time there. She also implemented several journalistic practices, such as editorial calendars and a copy-desk system.

She co-founded #wjchat, a weekly Twitter chat for web journalists, and was named one of Poynter's 35 people in social media. She is committed to the future on online journalism and frequently works with groups such as the Online News Association and the Asian American Journalists Association.

Bui is originally from Des Moines, Iowa and graduated with a degree in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University. When not in front of a computer, she's exploring L.A.'s vast food network and is a perpetual yoga student.
