imageAmy Gahran is a journalist, media consultant and entrepreneur based in Oakland, Calif. She is the cofounder of Oakland Local, a local news and community hub site serving Oakland. Amy also writes about mobile technology for CNN.com and Entrepreneur.com, and covers digital news for journalists and newsroom leadership topics for the Knight Digital Media Center at the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.

At Oakland Local, Amy led a mobile initiative focused on bringing Oakland Local to cell phones, which included serving the inexpensive, simpler "feature phones" which remain popular in low-income neighborhoods. Her research showed that 70% of Oakland residents primarily use feature phones. This project was funded by a grant from the Renaissance Journalism Center. In 2011 Amy led a mobile workshop for rural news outlets, held in Lincoln, Neb. and Missoula, Mont. In 2010 she co-taught a seminar at USC where students from the journalism, business and engineering schools collaborated over a month to develop and propose mobile strategies for three Los Angeles-area news organizations. And for a week in March 2011 she spoke at many USC Annenberg events during that journalism school's Mobile News Week.

And for a week in March 2011 she spoke at many USC Annenberg events during that journalism school's Mobile News Week.

For several years Amy edited the Poynter Institute's group weblog E-Media Tidbits, and she's worked in several capacities for the Society of Environmental Journalists since that group launched in 1991. She also co-founded the Boulder Carbon Tax Tracker project with support from a Knight News Challenge grant.

Amy consults on mobile, social and other digital media issues and strategies through House of Local -- a consultancy focused on innovation, community and open dialogue. She also continues to do freelance writing and editing on energy, environment, business, media and technology topics. Amy's cell phone is rarely out of reach. She's very active in social media, especially on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. She blogs at Contentious.com.
