imageJane Ellen Stevens is director of media strategies at The World Company in Lawrence, KS, where she is leading the development of a niche news structure that integrates social media into its DNA. She has been a science/technology/health journalist for 30 years. As editorial director of Oceans Now, she led the team that created the ocean science niche news sites TOPP.org and the Great Turtle Race 2007. She taught at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and was the co-creator of the Knight Digital Media Center's Multimedia Boot Camp training program. She has done consulting with news organizations, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Ventura County Star, the Oakland Tribune and National Public Radio. She began her career at the Boston Globe as a copy editor, and moved on to the old San Francisco Examiner, where she was copy editor, assistant foreign/national editor, Sunday magazine writer, and science-technology reporter and columnist. After working in newspapers for 12 years, she founded a science-technology-health feature service with 20 newspaper clients worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, the Dallas Morning News, The Washington Post, and Asahi Shimbun's AERA Magazine. She moved to the Web in 1996, as part of the first group of videojournalists at New York Times Television, and did multimedia reporting for the New York Times, Discovery Channel, and MSNBC.com. For four years, she lived and worked in Kenya and Indonesia, and has been to Antarctica three times on reporting fellowships. She's written for several magazines, including National Geographic. She is co-director of the Violence Reporting Project, which encourages news organizations to take a solution-oriented approach to crime reporting. She is the recipient of several fellowships, including the Reynolds Journalism Fellowship in 2008-2009, and the Knight-McCormick Leadership Institute Fellowship in 2010-2011.
