imageJanet Coats is the journalism initiative manager for The Patterson Foundation. The Patterson Foundation is focused on helping to sustain community journalism and connect journalism's innovators to each other to solve problems and share best practices. Janet has been a journalist for 25 years. A graduate of the University of Missouri, she worked as a reporter and editor at newspapers in Texas, Florida, Virginia and Kansas. As executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and later The Tampa Tribune, she was a leader in building newsrooms that focused on multi-platform journalism. She briefly served as dean of the faculty at The Poynter Institute. Janet has served as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes five times and chaired two conventions for the American Society of News Editors.
