Sylvia Allegretto is a labor economist and deputy chair of the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics at the University of California, Berkeley. CWED is a research center at the Institute for Researcher on Labor and Employment that focuses on projects concerning wage and employment dynamics in contemporary labor markets. Dr. Allegretto received her doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Colorado, Boulder and worked for several years at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. She co-authored two editions of "The State of Working America" and she most recently co-authored "The Teaching Penalty: Teacher Pay Losing Ground." Her research has examined economic inequality, long term unemployment, family budgets, teacher pay and low-wage labor markets. Dr. Allegretto is currently working on analyses of minimum wage effects on employment and on the subminimum wage received by tipped workers.
